Daily Wisdom

Welcome!

Established in September of 2001, we are a growing Christian family in the area south of Lake Travis. Come, be a part of the Lord's work!

Patriotism

I had a friend who believed in the absolute separation of church and state. He felt that it was wrong for Christians to vote or have any part in a government. I had another friend who believed that we had to be involved in politics because Christianity could only flourish in a democracy.

These two extremes seem radical to me. After all, Christianity was born in a conquered nation ruled by dictators. Yet, Christianity grew and flourished and overcame the very government that attempted to suppress it. As for participation in government, Christians are told to submit to the governing authorities and to honor them as those established by God (Romans 13:1-8). Jesus said that we should give to the government those things belonging to the government (Matthew 22:21).

It appears to me that God would want us involved in the selection process if given the opportunity. Fortunately, we live in a nation where Christian values permeate our laws and mores. We may not always appreciate the actions of our national leaders nor approve of all laws they pass, but the influence of God is still evident in many of our national institutions.

The fact that a large number of senators recently stood in public and pledged the flag with the words, "one nation under God," should kindle a warmth in our hearts. As Christians we may answer to a higher authority but we also answer to a government that protects our freedom of religion and even exempts us from tax on things religious. As governments go, ours isn't all that bad. May God bless America!
