As Christians, we live by faith. Our faith, however, is not a blind acceptance of something handed down by government or family. Faith is something we build on the basis of evidence. Paul wrote in Romans 1:17-20, "For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: 'The righteous will live by faith.' The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse."
Not only do we have the world around us that tells us there must be a creator, but we have the testimony of those who saw the mighty works of God and who walked with Jesus. For that reason we are told that faith comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17). Study of the Bible convinces us that we are dealing with God.
World events also influence our thinking. BC means "before Christ" and AD means "anno domini" or "in the year of the Lord." When we say (and the entire world says it) that the year is 2002, we are marking time from the birth of Jesus. It is interesting to note that today's secular writers no longer use BC and AD when giving dates. Today they use BCE or CE. BCE means "before the current era." It is as if they ignore the reason for the date they will not have to acknowledge the impact of Jesus on the world. Changing the letters does not, however, alter the fact that Jesus' birth is the turning point of history!
Finally, evidence to support our faith comes from human reasoning and logic. It is more reasonable to believe that the thinking intelligent mind of God created the world than that it somehow sprang forth from mindless matter. Our faith, then, comes from many sources, including our own experiences. Whatever the source of our faith, it is our faith and we have had time to develop it. When we stumble and show a lack of faith, Jesus says to us, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"
